Accuracy and Resolution of Flow with the IVAC® MedSystem IIITM Multi-Channel Infusion Pump

Eleanor L. Fitzgerald, RN, BSN
Clinical Study Associate

This White Paper documents the accuracy and resolution of flow of the IVAC MedSystem III Multi-Channel Infusion Pump under various conditions. The accuracy results are based on a series of internal product qualification tests.

ACCURACY

The IVAC® MedSystemTM III Multi-Channel Infusion Pump, while operating in the General Purpose I and II, Neonatal, or Operating Room I and II Device Types, maintains a +/-5% flow accuracy under the following conditions: (a) head height of -58 to +58 inches and (b) back pressure of -2 to +6 psi.

The system, while operating in the Controller Pressure Device Type, maintains a +/-5% flow accuracy under the following conditions: (a) head height of +48 to -48 inches and (b) back pressure of -1.8 to +2.7 psi.

RESOLUTION OF FLOW

The resolution of flow for the IVAC® MedSystemTM III Multi-Channel Infusion Pump is 2000 parts per milliliter. The mechanism has a minimum resolution of 0.5 microliters per pulse. The delivery algorithm is designed to initiate one pulse of fluid every 3 seconds over a rate range of 0.6 to 999 ml/hr. At rates of 0.5 ml/hr and lower, the interval between pulses increases. It reaches a maximum average of 18 seconds between pulses at the lowest rate of 0.1 ml/hr.

This range of intervals between pulses was chosen because it is considered to be well below the interval at which physiological parameters might vary due to intermittent delivery of rapid acting drugs.
