CMS to Consider Coverage of F-18 PET Bone Scans
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has posted a National Coverage Analysis (NCA) tracking sheet for “Positron Emission Tomography (NaF-18) to Identify Bone Metastasis of Cancer”.
Currently the Medicare National Coverage Determination (NCD) manual for PET identifies FDG as the only nationally covered radioisotope for use in PET for cancer imaging. CMS is reconsidering that policy and has started the process to review evidence on the use of sodium fluoride F-18 (NaF-18) to identify bone metastasis of cancer. A positive coverage decision would lead to reimbursement by Medicare for PET bone scans using NaF-18.
To help with its analysis, CMS is soliciting public comments through July 4, 2009.
CMS considers all public comments, and is particularly interested in clinical studies and other scientific information relevant to the technology under review.
The proposed decision memo due date is 12/4/09
The expected NCA completion date (final decision) is 3/4/2010
The NCA tracking sheet can be found at: www.cms.hhs.gov/mcd/viewtrackingsheet.asp?id=233
Public comments for this NCA may be submitted at: www.cms.hhs.gov/mcd/public_comment.asp
