General Care

To ensure that your hemi walker will have a long service life, inspect it regularly and follow these general maintenance tips:

Wipe the frame with a soft, damp cloth at least once a week to remove any dust and dirt. If exposed to moisture, dry immediately. Do not use an abrasive cleaner that will scratch the finish.

Use only a clean towel dampened with cool water when cleaning hand grips. Confirm that the hand grips are dry before using. NEVER use ammonia-based cleaning solutions or soap on hand grips, which may cause them to loosen or crack.

Periodically inspect all tips for wear or damage. If these issues develop, discontinue use until they have been replaced.

To ensure the best service from your product, contact Cardinal Health at 1-877-227-3462 for repair and/or appropriate replacement parts. DO NOT use non- Cardinal HealthTM parts.

Assembly

How to Size:

  1. Wearing your usual walking shoes, stand comfortably next to a chair or wall to help maintain your balance. Let your arm hang at your side with a natural bend at your elbow.
  2. The individual helping you size your hemi walker should measure from the ground to the crease in the middle of your wrist.
  3. Your hemi walker height should be adjusted so that the top hand grip is in line with the crease in the middle of your wrist.

Height Adjustment:

  1. Press the push button and turn the button section of the base, lengthening or shortening to the correct height by sliding the base up or down.
  2. Twist the base until the button pops out into the adjustment hole. Make sure the button has popped out completely. Push buttons are engaged when they fully protrude through the holes in the bracket and an audible click is heard.
  3. Ensure all buttons have popped out completely with all legs adjusted so that hemi walker sits level before using. At correctly adjusted height, your elbows should be flexed 20˚- 30˚ when holding top hand grip.
Usage

Adjusting Your Hemi Walker

  1. Remove the hemi walker from packaging, setting it upright.
  2. To open the hemi walker, grasp the upper handle of the walker with one hand. Use your other hand to push the lock handle down to the brace between the shorter legs of the hemi walker.
  3. Ensure that the legs of the hemi walker are spread completely and that the lock handle has locked securely into place on top of the cross brace.
  4. Wearing your usual walking shoes, stand with the hemi walker placed on your strong side, or opposite the injured side. The hemi walker height should be adjusted so that the top hand grip is in line with the crease in the middle of your wrist.
  5. To adjust legs to the correct height, press push buttons on each leg and slide into the desired height position before locking into place. Legs must be adjusted so that hemi walker sits level before using.
  6. To fold up the walker, reverse Step 2 above.

Before Each Use

  1. Ensure that all legs are adjusted so that hemi walker sits level before using.
  2. Ensure all locking mechanisms and push buttons are fully engaged.
  3. Ensure hand grips are securely attached and do not slip.
  4. Check tips for wear or damage. If these issues develop, discontinue use until replaced.
  5. Ensure hemi walker is placed far enough to the side that there is enough clearance for movement.
  6. Do NOT try to use stairs and escalators with hemi walker unless your healthcare provider has provided training.
  7. Watch out for potential safety hazards including, but not limited to, slippery, uneven or soft surfaces and objects in your path.

Using Your Hemi Walker

Use your hemi walker the way you would a cane, with the hemi walker placed on your strong side, or opposite the injured side.

Begin by moving the hemi walker forward, ensuring all four legs are in contact with the floor. Holding the top hand grip securely, move your injured leg forward, followed by your strong leg. End with your hemi walker and both feet in a line.

Continue in this manner, taking short, smooth steps to ensure balance.

As your balance and stability improve, you may be able to walk with a two-step sequence, where the hemi walker and your injured leg move forward together, followed by your strong leg.

Caution: Always ensure that someone is present to provide support assistance until you have practiced and become proficient at using your hemi walker.

Walker Three-Point Gait Pattern

Step 1

Align the middle of your feet with the back legs of the walker.

Step 2

Ensure all four legs are in contact with the floor before putting your weight on walker and lifting the hemi walker comfortably in front and to the side of you.

Step 3

Step forward carefully using your weak leg first. Follow with your other leg, placed alongside your weak leg. Repeat steps to move forward.
