Burst Strength

The Packaging Technology Center of Cardinal Health offers Burst Strength testing.

Burst Strength is a multi-directional tensile test that may be used to test the strength of a package by filling the package with air until it bursts and measuring the terminal pressure. This method has the advantage of testing the whole package and can show what the failure method might be in an aggressive EO sterilization cycle. The method is often used to benchmark the strength of a package prior to sterilization, and the result may subsequently be used in production as a quality test with developed PPKs.

The method may be used with the package unrestrained or within restraining plates to simulate packages stressed inside a closed shipping case.
