Rxe-sourceSM ("rxesource") service is a unique offering from Cardinal Health designed to maintain continuity of service when your hospital pharmacy is closed or during periods of peak demand. This strategic tool can help you ensure the quality of patient care while also controlling costs.

New flexibility in pharmacy coverage

Challenge

Today approximately 4,000 hospitals in the U.S. do not have 24/7 pharmacy service. This means that millions of medication orders and millions of doses of medications are administered to patients before a pharmacist has the opportunity to review the drug therapy, leading to thousands of medication errors each year. The national pharmacist shortage compounds this problem.

Solution

Cardinal Health's Rxe-sourceSM service, the remote review of medication orders, alleviates this problem. Pharmacists in regionally located Pharmacy Service Centers receive the medication orders by fax or scan technology. Then via HIPAA-secure Internet connection, the pharmacists log into the client hospital pharmacy computer system and review the medication profile, review necessary lab values, enter the medication into the patient profile, and authorize the order for administration. This process provides pharmacist review before the medication is administered to the patient, increasing patient safety and reducing medication errors.
