Finally, an industry standard that eliminates the guesswork

Tiburon® surgical drapes are classified as Level 4 – the highest rating established by AAMI

Astound® Surgical Gown

Tiburon® surgical drapes from Cardinal Health will change the way you think about drapes and draping at your facility. Tiburon fabric is a three-layer, microfiber composite consisting of an absorbent fluid control layer, an impermeable membrane and a soft patient comfort layer.

Tiburon® is engineered to pass the industry standard tests that measure fluid and synthetic viral penetration, which helps to provide the maximum in clinical and patient safety. It’s resistant to abrasion and puncture, yet its flexible, cloth-like properties allow it to drape naturally, following the contours of the patient. Classified as a level 4 device under the new AAMI guidelines for barrier performance, Tiburon surgical drapes provide the highest level of protection available in a surgical drape. Beyond the AAMI standard, Tiburon fabric also passes the even more stringent industry test for viral penetration ASTM F1671.

Drape layers

The CDC states that 2.6% of all surgical procedures result in a surgical site infection, increasing the patient's hospital stay by 7 to 10 days at an estimated cost of $3,000 per incident.

TiburonŽ surgical drapes were designed to improve patient outcomes by contributing to the reduction of surgical site infections. Combining an impervious barrier with impressive fluid control capabilities is the key to this remarkable material's effectiveness.

  • Impervious
  • Absorbent for fluid control
  • Puncture-resistant
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Low-lint
  • Flame retardant

According the AORN's 2003 Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guidelines, surgical drapes "should be as lint free as possible. Lint particles are disseminated into the environment where bacteria attach to them. This bacteria carrying lint may settle in surgical sites and wounds with the resultant increase in postoperative patient complications." TiburonŽ fabric is lower linting than other currently available surgical drape fabrics when compared in laboratory testing.

In a recent polling of 301 acute care infection control managers conducted by Harris Interactive, Inc., 40% of all respondents said they believed TiburonŽ orthopedic and cardiovascular drapes are "effective in the prevention of surgical site infections."
