Summer Internship Program

As a paid intern, you'll work with other Cardinal Health professionals, as well as our business partners, customers and vendors. Your contributions will start on the first day, working on meaningful and exciting projects that will give you the hands-on experience you need to build a solid foundation for your career. As an intern with Cardinal Health, you will have the opportunity to interact with other interns and participate in tours, lectures and presentations that will increase your knowledge of Cardinal Health as well as develop your leadership skills.

Our program

  • Early responsibility and experience
    We assign interns substantial projects and daily work to showcase their abilities and provide a good learning experience.
  • Networking
    As an intern you’ll work individually and in working teams with other Cardinal Health employees, often providing opportunities to meet senior leadership and work in small group settings.
  • Mentoring
    Interns will have a mentor assigned to help guide and answer questions during the program in addition to their full time manager who also acts as a mentor
  • Feedback
    In addition to daily and weekly feedback from management, interns will complete two performance evaluations to support career development and work with their manager to improve their skills.
  • Camaraderie
    Did we mention fun? Our program offers many community service and team-building events to help build your leadership skills and meet fellow interns.

Locations

Cardinal Health has two primary locations for Summer Internships - Dublin, OH or McGaw Park, IL. Find out more about these two cities and what they have to offer:

  • McGaw Park, IL (30 miles outside of Chicago)
  • Cardinal Health does offer summer internships in several other cities across the country. Locations are listed on our job descriptions.

Who should apply

Start early! We recommend full time students in their junior year of college who meet the following minimum requirements apply for a summer internship at Cardinal Health:
  • Progression toward a bachelor’s degree in an academic program related to the internship
  • GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (3.5 for Finance)
  • Relevant coursework and/or projects
  • Previous internship experience preferred, but not required
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Process and results orientation
  • Extensive community service and/or extracurricular activities

Note: All applicants must be a US citizen for the entire duration of their internship

When should you apply?

Cardinal Health offers many opportunities for students to learn more about the company and apply for opportunities.

Fall Summer internship positions are posted on cardinalhealth.com/college. Visit your career services office to see if Cardinal Health will be on your campus. Resumes are reviewed and phone interviews are conducted with qualified candidates.
Winter On-site interviews are completed, offers are extended, and start dates are finalized.
Spring / Summer Interns begin and participate in rewarding and meaningful internship program.

Example internship opportunities

Finance Intern

As a finance intern, you will assist in the financial planning and analysis to forecast and budget the expected financial performance of the company.

Opportunities are available in various departments such as: Accounting, Audit, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax and Treasury. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Assist with annual budget cycle, forecasting and analysis of financial results
  • Analyze and prepare financial reports
  • Enhance sales and sell margin reporting
  • Maintain domestic tax compliance for Cardinal Health individual legal entities and consolidated domestic tax returns
  • Communicate and present financial analysis
  • Participate in assigned audits designed to determine the effectiveness and adequacy of internal controls over financial reporting

Public Affairs Intern

As a public affairs intern, you will assist in creating a consistent message and brand to both internal and external audiences.

Opportunities are available in various departments such as Community Relations, External Communications, Internal Communications, Meetings, Events & Tradeshows and Public Relations. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Write internal and external communications
  • Assist in developing communication plans and measurement
  • Coordinate and participate in the Retail Business Conference, National Sales Meeting and industry shows
  • Monitor social media
  • Audit the company’s online media relations capabilities and develop a plan for improvement

Engineering Intern

As an engineering intern, you will help research, design and develop medical electromechanical devices and disposables that improve operating room productivity and clinician safety.

Opportunities are available in various departments such as Environmental Technologies, Packaging, Patient Care, Research & Development and Scientific Products. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Assist engineers with product development
  • Perform product and process testing in the laboratory and document all results in protocols, reports and lab notebook studies
  • Perform failure analysis and root cause investigations
  • Create component, assembly, manufacturing, test, FMEA, and other documentation
  • Work in compliance with all regulatory standards including EHS, cGMP, applicable FDA, and internal policies

Human Resources Intern

As a human resources intern, you will assist in the overall responsibility for implementing strategies and policies relating to the management of individuals.

Opportunities are available in various departments such as Diversity, Compensation, Learning & Development, Talent Acquisition and Talent Management. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Prepare executive summaries on diversity events
  • Support the Annual Review process by providing analysis and customer support
  • Manage and update HR data
  • Learn the strategic role HR plays within the organization
  • Research potential executive and leadership development education programs

Information Technology Intern

As an information technology intern, you will partner with various departments to ensure the most efficient technology solutions.

Opportunities are available in various departments such as Architecture, Application Design & Development, Application Support, Business Analysis, Infrastructure, Risk Management and Project Management. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Maintain relationship with the business to drive standard business process across the IT Enterprise
  • Responsible for translating business requirements into technical specifications
  • Manage the execution of programs and projects within the constraints of budget, schedule and scope while minimizing risk, and ensuring adherence to established processes and methodologies
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of project management methodology and software development lifecycle
  • Administer project plans, budgets and other key deliverables for project managers

Please note: These roles will utilize a strong business background making use of excellent communication and analytical skills. The majority of these roles are not technical-focused.

Marketing Intern

As a marketing intern you will assist in aiding the sales force to promote Cardinal Health’s products and services to our customers.

Opportunities are available within various departments, such as Ambulatory Care, Independent & Retail Pharmacy, Presource, Hospital Supply and Laboratory Products. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Responsibilities may vary based on department. Potential tasks could include:
  • Create and distribute marketing collateral, product launch materials and sales/training tools
  • Work with product managers to coordinate the logistics of training customers and business units
  • Assist in analysis of key metrics within various market segments
  • Produce proposals and establish timelines with clients to ensure punctual execution of programs
  • Participate in planning meetings with clients to help identify and drive future initiatives

Operations Intern

As an operations intern, you will gain exposure to how medical supplies are distributed to hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes and pharmacies throughout the country.

Opportunities are available in both corporate and warehouse environments. Responsibilities may vary based on location. Potential tasks could include:
  • Analyze various operational and financial statistics
  • Analyze existing key performance indicators (KPI); recommend improvements on effectiveness of metric, consolidate and centralize, and assign responsibility for future tracking of metrics
  • Design and document workflow and make appropriate recommendations that will positively impact operational effectiveness
  • Assist in leading a number of key projects for the business unit including transactional and warehouse operations
  • Learn and apply Lean Six Sigma principles and techniques
