Unit-based automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) have become the most widely used system for storage and control of medications in the hospital setting. Some innovative wholesalers are developing wholesaler-to-ADC direct refill programs. These programs are aimed at eliminating or mitigating human error by limiting the number of (error prone) process steps needed to refill the ADC. The University of California San Diego Medical Center (UCSD) is currently piloting a wholesaler-to-ADC direct refill program called Cardinal Assist. This study measures the safety and efficacy of this program by comparing "core process" variables of a traditional ADC refill system to similar "core process" variables of the Cardinal Assist program.
