Developing a Structured Response through Integration of Best Practice Nursing Interventions and Tools to Prevent Hospital-Acquired Pressure Ulcers
Lee Memorial Health System will ensure patient safety by developing a Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program (PUPP). The program will be implimented by a PUPP Coordinator and an integrated Pressure Ulcer Performance Improvement Committee. Together they will develop a structured response through integration of evidence-based practice nursing interventions and tools to prevent pressure ulcers, improve the interdisciplinary care of patients identified at risk of developing pressure ulcers, and improve the care of those patients with existing pressure ulcers. The program will address the national crisis of Pressure Ulcers affecting 2.5 million people and costing more than $11 billion annually.
PUPP will also help address questions such as:
- “Are the preventative interventions, which have been established over many years, based on science?”
- “Do the interventions address the multiple contributing factors of pressure ulcer development?”
- “What is the efficacy of these interventions in reducing the risk for pressure ulcer development?”
