Leading up to this year’s Retail Business Conference (RBC), our annual pharmacy business conference, Drug Store News talked to Cardinal Health experts about trends impacting independent pharmacists. Here is what they said about three hot topics:
1. Medication Adherence
Cynthia Pigg, vice president of Managed Care and Business Development at Cardinal Health, shared insights on how pharmacists can address barriers to improve medication adherence. “Barriers to medication adherence are behavioral, they’re financial, there are cultural barriers to taking your medication and then there’s healthcare literacy — all of these things flow into medication adherence,” Pigg said. 2. Changing pharmacy reimbursement models based on patient outcomes
Jeff Monroe, Cardinal Health director of reimbursement solutions, shared how Cardinal Health’s Reimbursement Consulting Services is expanding the ways it can help pharmacists focus on their patients to drive patient outcomes, which is gaining more focus as pharmacy reimbursement models change. Read more insights about improving pharmacy performance by prioritizing patient needs here.
3. Pharmacy deserts
Adam Chesler, director of regulatory affairs at Cardinal Health, talked about how telepharmacies are helping expand pharmacy access to more patients. “Increased access to a pharmacist will increase the number of patients who pick up their prescriptions and take them, leading to improved overall outcomes of therapy and reduced costs of healthcare,” Chesler said.
