Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most common healthcare-associated infection in the United States. In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated 500,000 cases and more than 29,000 deaths were caused by C. difficile. To combat this growing health problem, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) updated their clinical practice guideline for CDI. This guideline serves as an important resource for the medical, infection prevention and public health communities.1
