Nutritional insufficiency: Patient and tube-related complications
Overview
Feeding tube placement for enteral nutrition support is commonly used in patients who are critically ill and those who are chronically ill and are unable to meet nutritional needs orally.
Enteral nutrition delivers nutrients directly to the gastrointestinal tract, whereas parenteral nutrition is given via intravenous administration. Many clinicians prefer enteral nutrition because food in the gut plays an important role in maintaining normal physiology, including immune function.
A number of complications can occur when patients are tube fed. These complications can be patient related or tube related.

- Discuss patient-related complications for patients who are tube fed.
- Identify patient attributes resulting in a higher risk for dehydration.
- Discuss how to manage aspiration and other tube fed patient complications.
