Deep Vein Thromboembolism (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE Nursing Intervention Guide
Overview
The course delivers a model of best practices for risk assessment and prophylaxis of DVT. Topics include epidemiology and pathophysiology of DVT and PE, risk assessment for DVT, prophylaxis modalities for DVT (mechanical and pharmacological), and long-term consequences of DVT (including post-thrombotic syndrome). This continuing education activity has been designed for RNs, LPNs, and CNAs involved in the care of patients at potential risk for DVT.
Objectives
At the conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the incidence and clinical significance of DVT and PE.
- Summarize the major mechanisms involved in the formation of DVT.
- Describe at least three risk factors for each of the three components of Virchow’s Triad.
- Summarize the primary mechanical and pharmacologic means of providing prophylaxis for patients at risk of DVT.
- Discuss the potential long-term consequences of DVT.
