Venous Thromboembolism: Prevention in the post-acute setting
Overview
Venous-Thromboembolism (VTE) has a far-reaching and global impact. Every year, 10 million people worldwide and 900,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with VTE. Over one-third of patients who are diagnosed with DVT will experience a PE. A highly lethal condition, PE is responsible for 100,000 to 300,000 deaths per year in the US, and one out of four people with PE will experience sudden death as their only symptom.
Prevention of VTE entails the use of a risk assessment tool in populations of patients at risk for VTE.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participant should be able to:
- Discuss the clinical incidence and significance of DVT and PE in the Post-Acute setting.
- Describe the risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) etiologies.
- Explain the nursing role in performing risk assessment to identify venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk levels.
- Discuss the rational for assessing bleeding risk as part of venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment.
- Identify venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding risk factors using the Caprini Risk Assessment Tool.
